The U.S. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has greenlit construction and operation plans for the Atlantic Shores South project, which includes two offshore wind projects 1 and 2 that have the potential to generate up to 2,800 megawatts of renewable energy—enough to power nearly one million homes.

The project lease is located approximately 8.7 miles offshore from New Jersey at the nearest point. Approved construction plans include up to 197 sites for wind turbines, offshore substations, and a meteorological tower, with subsea transmission cables potentially making landfall in Atlantic City and Sea Garth.

This Atlantic Shores offshore wind project is a 50:50 joint venture between Shell New Energy US, the world's largest mobility retailer with the capacity to sell 279 TWh of energy in 2023, and EDF Renewables, a renewable energy company with 35 years of experience that generates 61,759 MW of electricity daily.
The project follows the cancellation of an offshore wind initiative by the Danish multinational energy company Ørsted in 2023, which was initially expected to be New Jersey's first. While other wind developments in the state have progressed, this one has faced challenges.

This wind farm will support economic growth in Atlantic City by providing a new operations and maintenance facility along with construction opportunities. The project is also expected to create tens of thousands of jobs in construction and maritime trades, contributing $1.9 billion to New Jersey's economy," he added.
