GE Vernova is progressing Japan’s renewable energy ambitions by securing a significant onshore wind turbine order for the EuroS project in Aomori. The company’s Onshore Wind Division announced a new contract to supply 14 turbines for the Iwaya and Shitsukari wind farms near Higashidori, Aomori, each with a capacity of 4.2 MW and a rotor diameter of 117 meters. The order, which is set to be finalized in the fourth quarter of 2024, marks another step towards expanding Japan’s clean energy infrastructure.

The collaboration aims to help Japan increase its share of renewable energy from 36% to 38% by 2030, as outlined in the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s Sixth National Power Mix Outline.

The addition of these wind projects brings GE Vernova’s total wind power capacity in Japan to 1.8 GW, with the new sites expected to begin commercial operations in 2028.

Japan’s evolving renewable energy strategy

Japan has prioritized renewable energy to reduce carbon emissions and increase energy security since the 2011 Fukushima disaster, with wind power at the heart of this effort, complementing broader initiatives to diversify and decarbonize the energy mix.
The country’s strategic energy plan provides a roadmap for balancing energy security, economic efficiency, sustainability, and safety. The latest draft of the Seventh Plan, released on December 17, 2024, reflects Japan’s evolving energy strategy, which sets a bold target of 40-50% renewable energy adoption by fiscal 2040 in response to changing global dynamics and technological advances.

Gilan Sabatier, Chief Commercial Officer, GE Vernova’s Onshore Wind business said, “We appreciate the trust that Eurus has shown in our GE Vernova technology. We are pleased to be able to support them on this project and look forward to continuing to enhance our relationship with them as they work to bring online more renewable energy both in Japan and globally.”

Masaru Akiyoshi, Executive Vice President, Eurus Energy Holdings cited, “We are excited to deliver another operating renewable energy project in Japan. We are grateful for the people of Higashidori Village, Aomori, the administrative agencies, all partners and stakeholders who support this project. We look forward to working with GE Vernova to build this new wind farm in Aomori to provide renewable energy, building on our existing collaboration”.
GE Vernova's Onshore wind business has a total installed base of more than 56,000 turbines and nearly 120 GW of installed capacity worldwide. Committed to its customers' success for more than two decades, its product portfolio offers next-generation high-powered turbines at scale that drives decarbonization through high-quality, affordable, and sustainable renewable energy.
