Yunlin OWF Nears 2024 Completion, Set to Power 6 Million Taiwan Homes

Yunlin Offshore Wind Farm, Taiwan's second-largest wind farm, with a capacity of 640 MW, is on track to meet its 2024 commitment, nearing final installation with 80 underwater foundations that will serve 6 million Taiwanese homes. It is situated in the Taiwan Strait, approximately 8 to 17 kilometers off the west coast of Taiwan, in waters that are 7 to 35 meters deep. Covering an area of 82 square kilometers, the wind farm is equipped with 80 wind turbines.

The electricity generated is transmitted to the power grid through two onshore substations located in Taixi Township and Sihu Township, Yunlin County, and is supplied to Taiwan Power Company under two 20-year power purchase agreements. This farm developed owner is Yunneng Wind Power Co. Ltd., and Skyborn Renewables is a subsidiary.

Since 2019, the farm has been financed by a combination of Taiwanese and international banks, along with export credit agencies. Upon completion, the wind farm will have an installed capacity of 640 MW, making it the second-largest offshore wind farm in Taiwan.

The developer Yunneng Wind Power Co. Ltd. highlighted the key achievements of the Yunlin Offshore Wind Farm project: 

• Successful installation of all 80 underwater foundations for the 640 MW wind farm. 

• Over half of the wind turbines have been connected to the grid for power generation. 

• The bigger success is that the project is ready for the final stage of engineering installation, as the commitment was a target completion date by the end of 2024. 

• It is Taiwan's first domestically produced wind farm that has fully met the standards for its committed projects and is committed to environmental protection.

• " Yunlin Offshore Wind Farm" is Taiwan's first offshore wind farm with a localization self-commitment achievement rate exceeding 100%.

A key milestone in the Yunlin offshore wind farm supply chain:

• This is Taiwan's first domestic underwater foundation project with foundation piles and transition sections.

• Yunlin is the first wind farm in Taiwan that will provide technical assistance to residents.

• Taiwan's Ai Offshore Wind Farm is the first to commit to domestically procure and build Crew Transport Vessels (CTVs). 

• In addition to green energy initiatives, Yunlin Offshore Wind Farm is also dedicated to environmental conservation.

• Since 2021, it has been cooperating with the Tianfeng New Energy team to implement the "Black-Faced Spoonbill GPS Satellite Tethering Project" for four consecutive years.

• As well as advanced GPS using solar-powered transmitters to track the behavior and migration patterns of the endangered black-faced spoonbill.

• Their team identified 10 new habitat hotspots and recorded more than 100 flight paths.
